When Jerry Waxler reached 55 years old, he had no idea how to adapt to this new period in his life. Then he discovered memoirs. Now, two decades, and five books later, he has developed a passion for sharing his big ideas about life as seen through the literary form of a memoir.
In today’s warm, friendly conversation with Linda Joy Myers, president of the National Association of Memoir Writers, we’ll talk about ideas that will offer you insight into the power of your own writing project. We’ll discuss the tools that can strengthen your motivation, your tenacity, and your belief in the importance of completing and sharing your memoir.
What you’ll learn about writing your memoir:
- Brain benefits! Emotional intelligence, right/left brain integration, mindfulness, verbal agility
- Healing from trauma and loss. Create a roadmap to your better self.
- Midlife renewal. Find meaning at any age.
- Service to others: become an active participant in society’s reliance on writers.
- Savor the half full glass, and the universal presence of the upward pull of hope.
- Enhance mutual empathy – break the barrier of the “other.”

Jerry Waxler is a licensed therapist in Pennsylvania, a memoir teacher and coach, and the author of five books which all explore the way we can use writing as a tool for personal and cultural healing. In his self-help book How to Become a Heroic Writer he shows how to use modern tools of self-development to help you become a writer. His how-to book Learn to Write Your Memoir in Four Weeks, breaks the process into 28 lessons. His sociology book Memoir Revolution: A Social Shift that Uses Your Story to Heal, Connect, and Inspire, observes the power of memoirs to change ourselves and our view of each other. Jerry’s Coming of Age Memoir Thinking My Way to the End of the World is about growing up, falling down, and finding himself in the sixties. His second memoir, to be published in early 2024, is How I Learned to Love the World, My Epic Journey from Solving Equations to Healing Hearts through Therapy, Memoirs, and Writing.

Jerry! It is great to follow your journey through life..
And take a look at our own journey while writing our memoirs…
Thank you for all you do.
Is early part of life needed to develop the writer’s character for later questions and comments? If so, what is the best way to handle it? Chronologic order or backstory or how? Looking forward to your presentation on the 15th.
I have completed the first draft of a memoir but have hit a stumbling block.
