Judy Reeves
The Long and Winding Road from Moments to Memoir

Judy Reeves’s memoir, When Your Heart Says Go, tells the story of a solo, around-the-world journey she took a few years after her husband died. The journey itself took place thirty years before the story about it was published. Why did it take thirty years to get from there to here? Why do some stories appear suddenly, and others take decades to find their way? These are some of the questions we’ll explore in “The Long and Winding Road from Moments to Memoir.”
You’ll learn about:
- How to capture a moment in your journal or daily writing practice
- Discovering the underlying significance of moments in your life
- Trusting the moments to find their own order, which may not be chronological
- The many shapes stories take as they their way from journals to prose
- How to shape captured moments into a memoir

Did you feel a need to explain to your readers in the introduction why now is the time to finally write about what happened so long ago?
Hi
Great to hear from you. Your book looks fascinating. I shall add it to my ‘to read’ list.
I too write memoir. I used to teach (in Birkbeck college), I’ve taught memoir writing and wrote a book called Writing Memoir. How to write a Story from your Life. I’m thinking about publishing routes for my second memoir currently, which got long listed in the American Memoir Magazine in 2022.
I live (and write) in London and am also a performance poet, currently running a monthly local event.
