Alchemy, an ancient science aimed at transforming base materials like lead into gold, is a powerful metaphor for memoir writing. Our traumas and wounds represent the “lead,” which we transform into the “gold” of healing through the writing and publishing process. In this member event, Jennifer Leigh Selig, author of Deep Memoir: An Archetypal Approach to Deepen Your Story and Broaden Its Appeal, will share the three stages of alchemy and offer examples of how published memoirists have named and claimed each stage, and how you can too! 

Writers will:

• Understand the Alchemical Stages: Learn the three stages of alchemy—nigredo, albedo, and rubedo—and how they relate to your memoir writing journey.
• Gain Inspiration from Published Authors: Explore examples of how memoirists have navigated each alchemical stage through their writing process.

• Normalize, Normalize, Normalize: Memoir writing, especially writing about trauma, often hurts before it helps. Understanding alchemy helps us normalize the journey into and through darkness.

Jennifer Leigh Selig is an LBGTQ+ teacher, book publisher, and author whose writing career spans nearly four decades. Her most recent book is Deep Memoir: An Archetypal Approach to Deepen Your Story and Broaden Its Appeal, a companion to her co-written Nautilus Gold award-winning book, Deep Creativity: Seven Ways to Spark Your Creative Spirit.
