Rare is the combination of book publisher and memorist and we have that in Vicki DeArmon, publisher of Sibylline Press, a press dedicated to publishing the brilliant work of women over 50. Vicki also happens to be the author of Foghorn: The Nearly True Story of a Small Publishing Empire, a novelistic and deeply personal memoir about her first publishing company and her coming of age in the heyday of book publishing in San Francisco in the 80s and 90s.

NAMW President Linda Joy Myers and Vicki will discuss the joys and sacrifices authors must made to create memoir. Vicki’s experience in writing her memoir over 20 years and then finally having it published has left her wiser for the next one. She believes writers of memoir—more than any other genre—must muster their courage, because publication means a double exposure, first of their work, but also of their life.  She’ll discuss the repercussions of that from having strangers knowing you intimately to having people from your past re-emerging. She’ll talk about the pursuit of truth and the perils of that both for the author and those included in the memoir. Linda Joy and Vicki will also discuss the special challenges of writing memoir in terms of recreating the past, finding your story arc, and delivering dialog.

In addition, Vicki will bring her 40 years of experience in the book business to discuss book publishing today and what publishers such as Sibylline Press are looking for in memoir.

Vicki DeArmon is the publisher of Sibylline Press and a revered 40-year veteran of the book industry. She started Foghorn Press in 1985 at age 25 in San Francisco before selling it fourteen years later. Sibylline publishes 60 plus books a year in memoir and fiction and, this fall, will introduce a new imprint, Sibyl Writing Craft, offering books and classes for writers.
