About NAMW

Hello memoir writers! In 2008, as a published author and experienced memoir teacher, I started the National Association of Memoir Writers. I believe in the power of memoir to change lives. To heal, to offer empowerment. Writing a memoir helps you to find your voice, and as you write, you develop new insights and perspectives on your life. I want to congratulate you on your desire to write your memoir.

As you write, you’ll need to discover the skills to weave the craft of writing with capturing your truths. This may mean interpreting memories and events that have been life-changing while you return in your writing to times gone by. In your memoir, you offer testimony about the significant events of your life that shaped you into who you are. A memoir connects you to others in a vibrant and real way—through story.

Benefits of Membership

As the founder of NAMW and a memoir teacher for over thirty years, I enjoy connecting on Zoom three times a month for live, vibrant conversations about everything memoir. We talk about craft issues: structure, character development, the inner critic, and the concerns everyone has about family and friends. What will they think? I feel so exposed writing about my life. What if people criticize who I am? What if I don’t know how to write very well yet?

During our monthly group coaching sessions, we discuss all these issues and more. What is group coaching? Members gather on Zoom and bring their questions, successes, and resources to share with other memoir writers. These are recorded so you can continue your learning progress.

You will be in a front row (Zoom) seat for our once-a-month presentation by an esteemed teacher or author who will dig deep into the craft of writing, editing, and publishing your memoir. These are recorded and become part of an ongoing archive of events you can learn from if you are a member.

In addition to the live monthly programs that I lead, members receive discounts on select workshops and classes.

When you become a member, I look forward to meeting you at our monthly events. Be sure to say hi and introduce yourself. I’m eager to learn what you are writing about and offering you resources and encouragement!
